Advantages
- Use unlicensed radio spectrum, so it does not need to provide additional fee for the license.
- Saves space and cost. (can be set up without cabling)
- Convenience (can be accessed anytime, do not need additional cable plug)
- Have a 802.11n global standard
- Have many components offered at a low price
Disadvantages
- Have a relative lower speed than wired networks
- Since it uses wireless transmissions, it has a high interference (by weather, blocks, buildings…etc.)
- There is a certain range that the wireless network can reach.
- Many old computer devices can not use wireless technologies. (low compatibility)
- Less reliable
Besides the advantages and disadvantages of wireless networks, there are a lot of issues related to the wireless networks, which includes but not limited to: Health issues, Environmental issues, and Social issues.
To solidify our knowledge on wireless networks, our class did a debate on whether wireless technologies are good to us or not. Here are the notes of the debate.
Notes taken by Lin and Joe
After today’s lesson, I realized that although there is advantages and disadvantages of using wireless networks. Wireless technologies are neccessary to our world’s development as a whole. However, we can not neglect the environmental and health issues brought by the overuse of wireless networks. Maybe in the futrue, we can find a way to deal with these problems, and make the world a better place!
